A TIME THOUGHT TO DREAM

Parco Villa Erba Cernobbio (CO) [wds id="1"] Inside the Orticolario Event 2014, at the Villa Erba’s Park in Cernobbio, the project “A time thought to dream” has been selected among 53 proposals for the International Competition of Creative Gardens. The proposal was born with the intention to realize a magical place in which we can feel welcomed and pampered. It is a feeling we all have lived, especially when we were children when we were laying down on the wildflowers with our noses up to look at the sky, without being watched, to come back to live, as in the past time, our thoughts and dreams. The project was to make a little wildflowers hill, a green oasis that links biodiversity and sustainability, beauty and wellness, usage and low cost, adding landscape and educational value to urban and residential green to test a sustainable green idea which is always more necessary.

PATHS STONES SOUNDS

Val Masino [wds id="12"] "All travelers, who stay in Morbegno, should spend some hours in the Val Masino valley. A clean creek rich in trout sounds along the rocky bottom of the valley; traces of ice age are evident on the rounded surface of the rocks… we were all in agreement that there isn’t any known valley, that exceeds the Val Masino in natural variety and beauty.” S.E. Kennedy First Disgrazia’s climber Val Masino is a land of legends and big hiking events. An old beech forest, a hot spring dating back to 400 ', and the creek Masino are the ingredients of this project marked by the rhythm of a chant written for the occasion, "The Lady of the Source." Steps, stone, and sounds: three words, simple and 'sound' of a journey in stages made from stone and woodworks from corten artists who represented the fundamental themes of the valley. For example geology with Menir, vegetation with tree Beech wise, reptiles with the bench - salamander, or the source with the sculpture of the Lady of the Fountain.

WATER AND RICE MUSEUM

Mortara (PV) [wds id="11"] “…Sometimes it happens… that nothingness will turn into a crystal clear landscape… this happens especially in Spring when the sky is as blue as the water of paddy fields which reflect it…” “ La chimera of Sebastiano Vassalli   The theme is the project of recovery of outdoor spaces of Moro's Palace as well as of communication of the rice as landscape, color, and sign of Lomellina. This logo tells the dynamism of the activities of an ancient civilization full of history, art, and economy of which Moro’s Palace is the memory. The square is the pulse center, adaptation, spread, basic stability, and milestone. In the courtyard area, we want to remember the rice landscape as the focus of the communication of the whole building. Little lights in the flooring sign the traces of the fields, which start from a main central canal made of led light that finishes on the cobbled stone (rice grains). The row of trees is made of a flowerpot coated in an aluminum colored with a wood bench having inside 5 Carpinus betulus pyramidalis, the number 5, because in line with the Celtic thought, it represents the magic square, while for the Latin people it represents the following phrases: “Sator arepo tenent opera rotas” (the farmer leads the works with the plow). An outdoor on the south side is covered by a painted iron pergola, covered with curtains and Rhyncospermum jasminoides in yellow enameled pots, whereas on the opposite side, some panels of curtains with written and landscapes close the cloister giving privacy to the activities of internal conferences at the Palazzo.

AIDA HOW GREEN YOU ARE

Milan [wds id="6"] Aida How Green You Are is the Social Housing Project selected by the housing Contest List advertised by the Municipality of Milan. The team was made up of professionals engaged in design and research in the field of sustainable architecture and green architecture. For the first time, green has played an important role not only in the detection of polluting substances, noise reduction, or for bio-climatic regulation, but is getting become a social politic and a therapy against anxiety and depression for those who live in urban places. 3 were the types of green studied with various species of bushes, shrubs, and trees to an "ecological" house: public green, (sharing with the city) town green (sociability among the condos), and private green (privacy). For example for a town the green bush for the equipped spaces is the Laurus nobilis, while the privacy gardens fences are the Ligustrum ovalifolium. The building oriented east-west has got at the Ground Floor some private gardens whereas on the other floors there is some green roof. All species belong to the Milan environmental heritage, are resistant to the temperatures and the climatic changes, are selected for the shadow or sun areas, and need low maintenance.

The symbol goes to the nest of a wood inhabited by a small animal which is represented in a sensory teaching path planimetry. The path starts from the main entrance and goes through several classrooms. “Butterflies Garden” (SIGHT), goes beyond the “ Sound Garden” (HEARING), meets the “Perfumes Garden” (SMELL), arrives at the “Corner of Wolverine” (TASTE) until it reaches from inside the “Pollicino’s Path” (TOUCH). The green indicates the alternation of full/empty with the different species and the tree's largeness. The building is made of 50 laminated wood frames Picea Abies, recalling an open wood. The bearing structures are made of a safe material ideal for keeping the thermal insulation of the building. The high insulation, the optimal distribution of transparent surfaces, the use of state-of-the-art systems for the recovery of rainwater, and the insertion in the cover of a photovoltaic system, will allow reducing to a minimum the use of mechanical systems to meet the energy needs of the building.

NEW URGENCY SURGERY CENTER

Segrate (MI) [wds id="26"] The new IRCCS Urgency Surgery Center will be built inside the San Raffaele Hospital, on a presently neglected central spot. In this private and special urban environment, the reclamation of a green area becomes utterly strategic, not only to ensure greater welfare for both operators and patients, but also to make the user perceive green as an instrument of communication and orientation, at different internal /external levels of the building, and at different distances. Moreover, the new cathedral of surgery has allowed the establishment of new 36 trees, excluding large shrubs. Those are ground floor: Acer campestre 'Elsrijk' (secondary road), Populus alba 'Pyramidalis' (via Olgettina), Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan', Viburnum rhytidophillum (university garden). A PRIVATE WELLNESS GARDEN

Inveruno (MI) [wds id="24"] A garden of about 1,500 square meters inside a private villa for a family with 4 small children has been designed North east of Milan. The customer's request was to have a garden that can be used by children, representative but low maintenance. A simple plant scheme has been studied, an easily accessible space in every area of the house with a variety of shrubs, carvings, and hedges in different hues of color, flowers and heights that increase the perception of space and with a few trees of a certain scenic effect, either hiding or highlighting views and entrances. Particular attention has been paid to native and non-toxic species which are resistant to children’s careless touch, to temperatures in the area, but also to climate change and possible diseases. The project is composed of: an inner patio open to the sky, a hidden court for relaxation, where all the rooms overlook, enriched by strawberry trees, Agapanthus, and ferns.

THE TALE OF VINE IN SICILY

Solicchiata, Castiglione di Sicilia (CT) [wds id="21"] Solicchiata is a small district in the town of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the north face of Etna, at about 600 meters above sea level, and has an ancient wine production tradition. This i13.000 sqms. estate has all the features both of the natural meso-mediterranean bioclimate environment and the traditional agricultural landscape, with its grapevine terracings, the manor house, and the millstone. The symbolic reference is the vineyard, whose name is “Nome est omen”. he whole landscape and architectural project focuses on the ecological use of the existing resources: terraces, herds, dry walls, lawns, stairs, and “munzeddi”. The new cellar, due to its shape and color, is the munzeddo (which means “heap” - Studio Mario Cucinella MCA Architects) which recalls the ancient stone deposits. The theme is “telling the world around the vine”, a production space, one of wine tasting and promotion of vine culture. The philosophy behind the project has followed the old strategy of exploiting any possible thing: for example pedestrian paths and pergolas are made of chestnut, while the vine supports and the plant sculptures are the logs of the vines. But the project also meant to recall the memory of farm food: chickpeas, lentils, peppers, olives, broccoli, celery, onions, capers, beans, peas, but also broad beans and lupins will be cultivated for the visitors' knowledge, along with the orchard of almonds, hazelnuts, olive trees, pomegranates, and figs.

EUROPAN

Sofia [wds id="20"] A “linear park” is an ecological passageway, a genuine green infrastructure, and a part of the green system of the city of Sofia. This complex organism is made up of three macro-elements: green areas, green lines, and green points. The linear park is structured on an axis from the outskirts all the way to the city center through a “green belt”, and is based on 4 different systems: the building system, the water, the green, and the infrastructures. Within the park, cycle paths are considered a priority over other vehicle use, and so is the east-west axis in relation to north-south paths running on different levels, such as the city plan and the underground lines. This stands for a sort of musical score palimpsest, in which people’s movement intercepts the functions of the buildings overlooking the park, and interacts with the different shades of green, offering the beholder varying viewpoints, within the ever-changing morphology of the place.

SAN FELICE SUL PANARO

San Felice sul Panaro (MO) [wds id="25"] The project refers to one of the worst-struck areas involved in Emilia’s earthquake in 2012. The new residential structure will host the 10 seriously disabled persons from “Il Picchio”, with a possible rise to 22 admissions, and will be available to the 9 towns in the Modena Province northern area: Camposanto, Concordia sulla Secchia, Finale Emilia, Cavezzo, Mirandola, San Felice sul Panaro, Medolla, San Possidonio, San Prospero. San Felice is situated in a landscape surrounded by various farming activities. From a careful observation of this territory we have developed a project concept out of the archetypes of “hayloft” and “rural countryside”. The project is made up of 4 aggregated, mutually intertwined bodies, which create a unitary inner space. The external structures are designed with curved lines in order to support and make the users’ activities and movements easier, even the ones in wheelchairs. The paved areas, along with the pathways, contribute to defining the rest areas. The green project will consider the original plant varieties of the site, preserving the entrance pathway in the tree-free area along the cycle path. The garden is divided into 2 parts: the private area allows a user/operator relationship that is inferior to 1:1. In this sensorial garden outdoor activities can be carried out, such as micro-gardening and aromatic plant cultivation. The public facade overlooking Via Garibaldi has no architectural barriers, and is completely permeable, a small green area donated to the town, with the intent to enrich the relationship between the youths who will benefit from the structure and the townspeople.
