Giardino Reale

Urban regeneration and sustainable landscape in Monza

The “Giardino Reale” urban regeneration project stems from the redevelopment of the former Feltrificio Scotti site, a disused industrial area located in a strategic area of Monza, a short distance from the Royal Palace of Monza, the Royal Expiatory Chapel, and the Villa Reale Park. A historical, landscape, and urban context of great value, which has guided the design project with sensitivity.

The project involved the creation of a new urban park for public use, with indigenous trees, water features, and a fitness trail, as well as private gardens on the ground floor and rooftop terraces distributed across the various levels of the residential complex. Greenery, a structural element of the project, is conceived as an ecological infrastructure that crosses the area from north to south, divided into woods, urban gardens, green roofs, and tree-lined streets.

The landscape design is the result of careful botanical and historical research, with references to texts on forestry and phytosociology, but also to the memories preserved by Engel, Schiller, and other historical gardeners of the Royal Villa of Monza, who left a valuable scientific and naturalistic legacy for the area.

The network of public cycle and pedestrian paths and internal connections between the lots is designed to seamlessly connect the different areas of the complex, promoting accessibility, visual continuity, and integration between open and built spaces. With this in mind, biodiversity is encouraged through careful design choices: there are no dense, impenetrable areas, but rather flower-filled meadows, shrubs, and strips of vegetation that guarantee a complete sensory experience—visual (flowers, butterflies), auditory (birdsong, sounds of nature), and olfactory (fragrant essences, resins, aromatic plants).

“Giardino Reale” stands out as a virtuous example of sustainable urban regeneration in Lombardy, where landscape, architecture, and historical memory interact to breathe new life into a disused site, restoring it to the city of Monza as a high-quality public green space and residential area.
