The Livorno Hospital competition was an opportunity to design places of care with the care of places in mind, with solutions aimed not only at the environmental upgrading of the hospital area with the surrounding urban space, but also at the promotion of a green space with cultural and ecological value to serve a complex structure such as a hospital and the community.

The landscape master plan identifies the Park as the strategic meeting place between the seaside city and the rural city, of which the future Cittadella della Salute is an example of urban regeneration through the enhancement of a diverse system of private and public spaces integrated with its urban vocation as a Smart City.

The principles of the concept have as their founding elements greenery and water, which are expressed in their different forms and functions with: slight earth movements, woods as barrier/boundary/mitigation elements, water (water features, fountains, misting, phyto-purification…), multiple types of gardens: equipped, hanging, greenhouses, conservatories and courtyards.

The historic cages will be green rooms lined with scented creepers, which will be used for light and sound reproduction reminiscent of butterflies and birds.

The dog area will be maintained and the play area for small children improved. The former Bear Cave will be a small food court with attached restrooms disguised as creepers. The former bear enclosure fountain will be restored and surrounded by an informal low, scented hedge.

The new hospital will have permeable comb-like outdoor courtyards, which will accommodate a water channel in the central parterre, and in the covered part Gigi Balla, an iconic sculpture of a bear, as a memorial to the Park Zoo bear.

A greenhouse, Winter Garden will be on the 1stFloor and will overlook the Park and house a collection of Continental Medicinal Plants, while on the other two bodies there will be green terraces.
