Rome Science Museum
If the theme of a contemporary Science Museum immediately recalls words such as hands-on interactivity, virtuality, digitization, multimedia: the language of choice of the new generation, its outdoor layout is intended to be an educational space of doing.
An intimate but open space in the Flaminio District, complementing its vocation and concentration of cultural, sporting and artistic experimentation activities at the European level.
The east-west axis of Via Guido Reni with plane trees becomes a public promenade, while from north-south the existing linden trees establish an important continuity between the two axes of the trident, Via Masaccio to the north and Viale del Vignola to the south, involving the MAXXI square.
To reinforce this permeability, the new building opens onto a subtracted space, stolen from the built environment to become a tactile, visual, olfactory, and auditory experience. The texture of the pavement is a pixel that from the mineral material of Fossil Square becomes increasingly green.
All selected tree and shrub species belong to the local plant heritage and have therapeutic properties.
The Ginkgo biloba is the perspective fire that crosses the foyer from west to east, and its’ reflection can be seen on a small water fountain, a typical element of Rome’s landscape. In the 4 Elements Garden, there are 4 round pavilions, shaded by 4 trees: a pomegranate tree for the Earth pavilion, a trembling poplar for the Air one, a palm maple for the Fire one, and a willow for the Water pavilion. The whole garden is a book open to reading and interpretation at different levels. In a similar vein, the project continues with small size trees and aromatic plant species on the terraces as well, providing shade and different scents according to each season.
